The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Cayetano Garcia (ASN: RA-38677234), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 December 1950, in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. Sergeant Garcia was platoon sergeant in Company K which had the mission of securing the high ground near Wonju. As the platoon neared the top of the hill, one squad leader was seriously wounded by intense automatic weapons and small arms fire. Observing that the wounded man had fallen in an exposed position, Sergeant Garcia dashed through the enemy fire to the wounded man’s position within seventy-five yards of the enemy positions. As he started to evacuate the wounded man, he was hit in the leg and unable to walk, but he crawled back to friendly lines pulling the wounded man along with him. The gallant conduct displayed by Sergeant Garcia reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
