The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Wayne Arthur Garber (ASN: RA-17560054), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant First Class Garber distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 14 June 1971 while serving as a Light Weapons Infantry Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team 146, Advisory Team 71, Delta Regional Assistance Command, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, Sergeant Garber accompanied the 92d Regional Forces Group on a search and clear operation in Hoa Tu District, Ba Xuyen Province. Displaying courageous determination and with utter disregard for his own safety, he moved into a heavily-fortified bunker complex to eliminate an armed Viet Cong he saw flee into the area. Recognizing the serious threat this posed to the headquarters element, Sergeant Garber selflessly risked exposing himself to a known enemy force and searched out the Viet Cong. With the surprise gone from the intended ambush, the friendly forces were able to react quickly and defeat the enemy force. Because of Sergeant Garber’s courageous actions, aggressive determination, and complete dedication to the accomplishment of his mission, an enemy ambush was eliminated and the defeat of a strong enemy force was inflicted. His efforts not only saved the lives of several Regional Forces soldiers, but inspired the entire unit during a time of great urgency and necessity. Sergeant First Class Garber’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
