The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William J. Games (ASN: 0-2020014), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 1 to 3 March 1951 in the vicinity of Sanggo-ri, Korea. During this period Captain Games’ Company was ordered to take two well-fortified enemy positions in the hills near Sanggo-ri. The company moved forward in the attack until they were within 200 yards of the first objective. When intense enemy fire momentarily halted the company, pinning them down and inflicting severe casualties, Captain Games, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to enemy fire, reorganized his men and urged them on in the attack. When the company had again moved forward to a point less than 50 yards from the enemy, and was again pinned down by hostile fire, Captain Games encouraged his men and led them in a savage all-out assault on the enemy positions. The outstanding courage and inspiring leadership displayed by Captain Games reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
