The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (General Staff Corps), [then Lieutenant Colonel] Nicoll F. Galbraith (ASN: 0-11588), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Southwest Pacific Area, from 2 to 4 January 1942. Serving as Assistant to the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-4, United States Army Forces in the Far East, Colonel Galbraith displayed outstanding bravery in voluntarily advancing to locate and direct the removal of quantities of valuable supplies which were in momentary danger of falling into enemy hands as American forces fell back toward Bataan, Philippine Islands. On numerous occasions he succeeded in evacuating supplies from towns already ablaze and under enemy fire and in constant danger of being cut off by the foe. By his heroic actions and outstanding devotion to duty, Colonel Galbraith set an inspiring example of personal courage to the men of the command and saved thousands of tons of supplies which proved responsible in large measure for the gallant and protracted defense of Bataan. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
