The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George L. Gadsby (ASN: RA-11224979), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 November 1952, a squad of Company G, 2d Battalion, to which Private Gadsby was attached as a medical aid man, was engaging a reinforced enemy company on “Jackson Heights”, in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. Private Gadsby remained under the enemy mortar and small arms fire as he cared for the wounded. On one occasion, he climbed down a thirty five foot cliff to render aid to a wounded man and after administering blood plasma to the casualty, he carried him back to the friendly perimeter. With communications severed and the friendly ammunition supply diminishing, he infiltrated through the enemy ranks, returned with the critically needed ammunition and distributed it among the riflemen. Again leaving the friendly perimeter, he located litter bearers and directed them to the scene of battle. He then guided a relief squad to the area and remained amid the enemy fire until he was assured that all the wounded had received medical attention. Private Gadsby’s gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
