The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Howard M. Angell (ASN: 2260613), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 362d Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, 29 September 1918. Sergeant Angell was wounded during the advance of his regiment on Gesnes, but, refusing medical treatment, he continued in command of his section until next morning, when he was ordered to the dressing station by his battalion commander.
