The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Wayne R. Fuller (ASN: 0-888220), United States Army, for gallantry in action near Yamai, New Guinea, on 21 February 1944. After Captain Fuller had led his troops in intense fighting to establish a beach head on the west bank of the Mot River, the enemy stages a strong counterattack in an effort to dislodge our troops from the position. In the face of heavy machine gun, mortar and sniper fire, he moved to the foremost position of the front line to direct fire. Captain Fuller’s courageous leadership inspired his men to rout the enemy from their prepared positions, to drive them back, and by the resulting three hundred yard advance, to make possible the crossing of the river by additional troops.
