The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arnold T. Fuller (ASN: RA-11220211), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the morning of 6 November 1952, Private Fuller was with the men of a platoon of Company F, 2d Battalion, occupying defensive positions on an outpost referred to as “Jackson Heights” in the vicinity of Hak-Tong-Ni, Korea. Suddenly the enemy attacked the friendly forces and after engaging the foe in a bitter exchange of fire, the friendly unit was ordered to withdraw to more tenable positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Fuller exposed himself to an intense hail of enemy small arms fire as he remained in the critical area, fearlessly rendering medical aid to a fallen comrade and calling for someone to assist him in evacuating the casualty until his platoon leader returned. While he and the officer were carrying the wounded man down the steep slope, they encountered numerically superior hostile forces. Quickly maneuvering himself to the base of a ledge, Private Fuller courageously defended the wounded man by subjecting the overwhelming enemy forces to an intense volume of fire from his carbine until his supply of ammunition became exhausted and the foe quickly overran his position and captured him, the officer, and the casualty. He escaped from his captors and returned to his unit the following morning. Private Fuller’s conspicuous gallantry, selfless and intrepid actions reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
