The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Walter Gresham Andrews, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vendhuile, France, September 29 – 30, 1918. Although severely wounded in the arm on the morning of 29 September Captain Andrews gallantly led his company throughout the attack on the Hindenburg line. After the advance he made a personal reconnaissance under heavy shell and machine-gun fire and organized a section of a trench within 20 yards of the enemy line. This position was held against enemy grenade and machine-gun fire until his company was relieved on the afternoon of September 30.
