The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Sherwood Frutchey (ASN: US-52098670), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Corporal Frutchey was manning a mortar, delivering supporting fire for his unit during its withdrawal to more tenable positions. Upon being informed that the friendly elements were in dire need of more effective mortar fire, Corporal Frutchey voluntarily moved his weapon to a position under direct enemy observation and fire. From this new site he delivered a devastating hail of fire on the hostile force. In an effort to dislodge Corporal Frutchey from his emplacement, the enemy began to concentrate their mortar fire in his immediate vicinity. Knowing that his comrades were depending on his supporting fire, Corporal Frutchey fearlessly maintained his position. As a result of his dogged determination and valiant efforts, friendly elements were able to withdraw with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to comrades displayed by Corporal Frutchey on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
