The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Russell Frost, Jr. (ASN: 0-61205), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 21 August 1950 near Hyong-Pung, Korea. On that date a motorized patrol from a friendly unit was ambushed by an enemy force which had infiltrated into a village. Lieutenant Frost’s platoon was assigned the mission of rescuing the ambushed patrol. The platoon had accomplished its mission and was returning through the town when it was subjected to enemy automatic weapons fire. Lieutenant Frost, in order to prevent any casualties within his platoon, immediately moved toward the enemy gunners, who were concealed in a building. He approached to within a few feet of the building and threw hand grenades into the room. When the grenades failed to explode, he started to enter the building, but was killed by a burst of enemy automatic weapons fire. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Frost in sacrificing his life for his men reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
