The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Howard H. Froment (ASN: 0-1018559), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Hong-ni, Korea. Enemy forces in great numbers had infiltrated the lines and attacked the 3d Battalion’s Command Post. Despite the fact that the command post tent was the focal point of the attack, Captain Froment voluntarily remained in an exposed position to advise higher headquarters of the attack and to call for reinforcements. Later, when the area was being evacuated under intense machine gun and small arms fire, he voluntarily remained behind to load the wounded on tanks for evacuation. The gallantry displayed by Captain Froment reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
