The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Andrew C. Frew (ASN: US-52105237), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 5 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On this date the supporting artillery, of which Sergeant Frew was a member as a forward observer, was assigned the mission of destroying the enemy fortified observation posts which were obstructing the advance of friendly troops. Due to the bareness of the terrain, it was necessary for the artillery fire to be directed from a position readily observed by the enemy. Despite the intense hostile small arms, artillery and mortar fire, Sergeant Frew remained in an exposed position to observe and direct the friendly artillery fire. His accurate and effective direction of artillery fire destroyed all enemy fortified observation posts, bolstering the morale of the assaulting friendly troops and contributing greatly to the successful completion of their mission. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Frew on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
