The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert F. Freman (ASN: RA-19414627), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 September 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Private Freman, an automatic rifleman, was with his unit which had the mission of attacking and securing an enemy-held hill. During this operation the assaulting elements met intense hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire which temporarily halted their attack. Realizing the seriousness of this situation, Private Freman voluntarily advanced through the determined enemy fire in an attempt to maneuver to the enemy’s rear. He successfully completed this dangerous movement and then single-handedly assaulted the hostile positions. In the course of this action he was wounded but the sudden fire coming from the rear completely disorganized the enemy soldiers and caused them to flee from their positions. As a result of his courageous actions, his unit was able to continue the assault and secure its objective with a minimum of friendly casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Freman on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
