The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Jimmy Grant Freeman (ASN: RA-24554662), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Staff Sergeant Freeman distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 24 March 1969 while serving as Light Weapons Infantry Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team IV-49, Advisory Team 71, Delta Military Assistance Command, United States Army Advisory Group, IV Corps Tactical Zone, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, the operating base for two Popular Forces platoons at Tam Soc, Thuan Hoa District, Soc Trang Province, Republic of Vietnam, came under intense enemy mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire from two directions. Sergeant Freeman immediately established radio contact with the advisory team Tactical Operations Center, reported the situation and requested air support. Although his position was the most vulnerable in the post and became untenable as the battle rapidly progressed, he remained to direct all available support. Staff Sergeant Freeman’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
