The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John L. Fredricks (ASN: RA-16297034), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 September 1950, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his company was engaging the enemy in a heavy mortar duel. At approximately 2300 hours the enemy delivered an intense barrage, following with an attack on an outpost near the company firing positions. Sergeant Fredericks organized the company headquarters personnel and led them in a fierce counter-attack upon the enemy. Although under a constant hail of enemy fire, Sergeant Fredericks fearlessly exposed himself while directing the return fire of his unit. The enemy, after suffering severe casualties, was forced to abandon its positions. At dawn Sergeant Fredericks led a patrol into a nearby village and captured three enemy soldiers, including an officer. The courage and determination displayed by Sergeant Fredericks reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
