The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Gordon W. Fredette (ASN: RA-31453101), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Sergeant Fredette’s unit, moving along a narrow mountainous road, came under intense fire from the surrounding hills. Immediately Sergeant Fredette had his men take cover and open fire on the enemy positions. Fearlessly, and with utter disregard for his personal safety, he continuously exposed himself to intense enemy fire in moving from man to man. He directed their fire by pointing out and by firing tracer ammunition at the enemy positions. In so doing he was wounded in the hand. Noticing a jeep blocking the road, he ran to the jeep, mounted it, turned it around, and drove it through a hail of enemy fire to a position off the road, clearing the road for other vehicles and personnel to pass. Sergeant Fredette then returned and assisted in loading wounded personnel aboard vehicles. His heroic actions, leadership, and initiative reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
