The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Seth Roderick Frear (ASN: 0-26166), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division, in action near Wallendorf, Germany, on 17 – 18 September 1944. When an enemy counterattack seized a position covering a route of withdrawal for the 5th Armored Division, Captain Frear personally led his seriously depleted unit through heavy enemy artillery and small-arms fire in a drive which forced superior numbers of the enemy from their positions and secured a bridgehead over the Sauer river. The conspicuous courage and leadership displayed by Major Frear were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
