The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Francis T. Francioni (ASN: 0-1913475), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, [then Company C], 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 and 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Yanggu, Korea. On 2 September intense enemy fire inflicted numerous casualties upon the officers of Company C. Lieutenant Francioni, communications officer, was assigned to lead one of the leaderless platoons for the coming attack. Immediately reorganizing his depleted ranks, Lieutenant Francioni produced a competent fighting force. His confident manner instilled a new spirit within the men and inspired them to advance and defend their positions during the night. The following morning his unit led the final assault against enemy positions. Lieutenant Francioni, undaunted by the enemy counter fire, skillfully maneuvered his men towards the objective and directed flame throwers in neutralizing several hostile bunkers. During the ensuing action, he was painfully wounded and forced to be evacuated. Lieutenant Francioni’s dauntless leadership was greatly responsible for the successful completion of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Francioni reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
