The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Gerald L. Huffman (ASN: US-22986657), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 May 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that day Company G was attacking a well dug-in enemy force on Hill 729, consisting of at least four heavy machine gun nests and thirty to forty other automatic weapons. In the assault on the hill all of the officers of the company and two platoon sergeants were wounded. Corporal Huffman, seeing that all the leaders of the company were casualties, exposed himself time and time again to the intense enemy automatic weapons and small arms fire while assisting in the reorganization of the company. He continued in his efforts until the reorganization had been successfully completed. Corporal Huffman’s gallantry in actin, devotion to duty, courage and leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
