The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Elmer M. Fox (ASN: 0-1294645), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division Artillery, United States Army. During the periods 22 – 23 April 1951, in the vicinity of Majon-ni, Korea, Major Fox voluntarily flew his unarmed aircraft in night flights over enemy lines. Spotting the flashes from a large concentration of artillery which was shelling friendly forces, he immediately directed the return fire of friendly artillery and effectively silenced the enemy guns. When the engine of his aircraft lost oil pressure and he was forced to return to the airstrip, Major Fox immediately took off in another ship and resumed his mission. With no regard for his own safety, he flew at extremely low altitudes and, despite encountering intense hostile anti-aircraft and small arms fire, reported invaluable information regarding enemy movements and directed friendly artillery fire on enemy concentrations. Major Fox’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
