The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Edward E. Fox (ASN: RA-18321177), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujang-dong, Korea. While attacking an enemy-held hill, Company G was counterattacked by an overwhelming enemy force and, under severe pressure, was compelled to withdraw. The route of withdrawal was blocked by a hostile group of estimated company strength approximately 500 yards from friendly lines. Sergeant Fox reconnoitered the enemy line without finding a break and returned to informed the company commander of the situation. When the company prepared to launch an attack upon the enemy in an attempt to break through to friendly lines, Sergeant Fox dashed fearlessly forward in a single-handed charge. Firing his rifle and hurling hand grenades, he drove a wedge through the hostile line which was quickly enlarged by other members of the company. Then, from his position in rear of the enemy he poured deadly fire into their midst which, augmented by the concentrated fire of the company, shattered the hostile block and enabled the company to effect its withdrawal. The gallantry and inspirational conduct under fire displayed by Sergeant Fox reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
