The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Walter W. Fowler (ASN: US-56078792), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date Company C launched an assault on strategic dominating terrain features held by a numerically superior enemy force. During the attack, elements of the unit came under intense hostile fire which halted their advance. Private Fowler, an automatic rifleman, realizing the seriousness of the situation, continued the assault using marching fire and destroyed the impeding enemy positions, thus enabling his comrades to resume their advance. With his automatic rifle, Private Fowler led his men forward inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy and inspiring his comrades to greater heights of daring by his own act of bravery. He continued on in this heroic manner until he fell mortally wounded by the hostile fire. His dauntless courage and self-sacrificing devotion to duty were highly responsible for the success of his unit in this engagement. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Fowler reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
