The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clifford F. Foss (ASN: US-55036058), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, as Company E was occupying defensive positions on Hill 400, Private Foss, a machine gunner, identifying a large group of men approaching his position as enemy troops, opened fire on the leading elements. Quickly dispersing, the hostile soldiers retaliated with a withering hail of small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire. Although wounded in this initial burst of fire, Private Foss continued to man his weapon with great effectiveness until it was rendered inoperative by shrapnel. Undaunted, he began hurling grenades and, having exhausted his supply, moved to another machine gun whose operators had been wounded and utilized the weapon until the enemy was repulsed. The aggressive gallantry and singular initiative displayed by Private Foss reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
