The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant W. M. Forshaw (ASN: RA-18337674), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 31 August 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date Sergeant Forshaw voluntarily moved to a forward position to establish radio communications with a rifle company and his battery. Although the position was under constant enemy artillery and mortar fire he continued his mission of relaying firing data to the forward observers. When the enemy launched a strong attack the infantry elements were force to withdraw, leaving him exposed and surrounded by the enemy. With complete indifference for his personal safety he remained at his post until he received orders to withdraw. Later he attempted to re-establish radio contact with the rifle elements, but a recently established enemy roadblock prevented him from reaching his former position. He maneuvered about until he found a suitable location that afforded transmission where he again established contact with the forward observer party. The data he relayed enabled his battery to place heavy and accurate fire upon the advancing enemy and aided materially in the final repulse of the hostile attacks. The gallantry and high devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Forshaw on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
