The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Third Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) John Franklin Forrest, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Colonel Forrest distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 23 January 1968. Lieutenant Colonel Forrest directed his control helicopter to lay suppressive fire on enemy positions below and directed his command and control ship through heavy enemy fire at treetop level, making successive passes and firing machine guns until all ammunition was expended. His actions inspired his troops so that without hesitancy, they moved into the objective area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Forrest, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
