The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph William Ford (ASN: ER-11181369), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving with Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Punchon-ni, Korea. On that date, Private Ford was defending his position against fanatical attacks by the enemy. Although seriously wounded early in the action, Private Ford courageously continued to defend his position with only a pistol and hand grenades. Ignoring his serious and painful wounds, and with the use of only one arm, he continued to fire on the enemy until the attack ceased. His valorous action served to inflict many casualties on the enemy and materially aided in the repulse of the enemy attack. The gallantry and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Private Ford reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
