Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 545 (November 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Abraham E. Foote, Jr. (ASN: RA-44001741), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 June 1951, the Machine Gun Platoon of Company M and the Third Platoon of Company I were assaulting Hill 283 near Pongch’on, Korea. Corporal Foote was in charge of a machine gun section which had the assignment of relieving pressure on a pinned down rifle platoon, when one of the machine guns failed to function. After ordering proper coverage by the other weapons, Corporal Foote crossed open terrain under heavy small arms fire and calmly repaired the gun. At this time, a second weapon in the same position exhausted its ammunition, but again at great personal risk, he remained in the location and belted ammunition by hand for both guns until the attack was successfully completed. The gallantry and steadfast courage displayed by Corporal Foote reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
