The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Emory M. Folmar, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On that date, Lieutenant Folmar was serving as Platoon Leader of the 1st Platoon of Company G, whose mission was to make contact with an enemy position known as “Chocolate Crop”, located north of “T-Bone” Hill and take a prisoner. As the friendly unit neared its objective it was subjected to a devastating hail of enemy grenade and automatic weapons fire. During the first exchange of fire, Lieutenant Folmar although painfully wounded, urged his men forward and engaged the enemy in close combat. He displayed outstanding courage and good judgment and was responsible for inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. Though wounded a second time and suffering from the loss of blood, he still refused medical attention and insisted in helping the other wounded until all members of his unit were safely away from the impact area. The courageous conduct and consummate devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Folmar reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
