The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) George C. Fogle (ASN: 0-44428), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1952, in the vicinity of Chagun-Gol, North Korea. On that date, Colonel Fogle was directing elements of his battalion in an attempt to retake Hill 266, “OLD BALDY”, which had been seized by enemy forces on the previous evening. Observing that the attack had been stalled by the intense hail of enemy fire, Colonel Fogle called the Regimental Commander to inform him that he, personally, was going to lead an assault on the hill. Gathering a group of “trains” personnel and slightly wounded men who had collected near the forward Battalion Aid Station, he led them down the fire-swept road to the eastern slope of “OLD BALDY” and up the shell-torn hill. After he had fought his way to the crest he deployed his men and directed their efforts in returning the fire of the enemy horde. Personally manning a machine gun which he had dug from a ruined bunker he poured a deadly hail of fire into the hostile positions. After three and one half hours, his ammunition was expended and the rapidly increasing volume of enemy fire forced him to lead his little group back to safety. The outstanding combat leadership, and complete disregard for personal safety in the face of great danger greatly inspired all who observed him and denied the enemy an opportunity to consolidate their positions. The consummate fortitude and courageous actions of Colonel Fogle reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
