The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Robert M. Flynn (ASN: 0-1301978), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 August 1950, Captain Flynn went forward to an area which was under heavy enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire and found that the motor pool was also under attack near Saya, Korea. Quickly organizing the drivers into an effective team and moving three tanks and a tank retriever, the directed effective fire into the enemy until a withdrawal route was opened. Despite the heavy fire, he succeeded in removing the vehicles and then withdrew the personnel into the battalion perimeter. By his calm courage, exemplary leadership and notable tactical skill, Captain Flynn prevented casualties among the drivers and possible loss of critical transportation. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
