The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John W. Flowers (ASN: US-55023621), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 September 1951 in the vicinity of Worun-ni, Korea. On this date Company G was defending its newly-won positions along Bloody Ridge against a fanatical counterattack of a determined hostile force. Sergeant Flowers, with complete disregard for his personal safety, set up his mortar in an extremely forward position and delivered deadly fire upon the advancing hostile forces. During the ensuing action, a shell bursting nearby, dislodged him from his position. In spite of his seemingly helpless conditions, Sergeant Flowers carried his mortar across the fire-swept terrain to establish a better position. Although painfully wounded in this act, he refused to leave for medical attention and continued with the mission. Sergeant Flowers’ courageous and selfless actions accounted for numerous hostile casualties and aided immeasurably to the successful defense of his unit’s position. His valor was outstanding on the field of battle where bravery is common and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
