The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] Roy L. Flood (ASN: RA-19378891), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Yongdong, Korea. On this date, during an attack on well-fortified enemy positions, Company L was subjected to intense hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire, wounding several men and halting the advance. Voluntarily acting as a point man and maintaining a lead position with the assaulting unit, Corporal Flood immediately became aware of the dangerous situation that existed. Leaving the safety of his position and crossing the fire-swept terrain, he single-handedly assaulted several enemy bunkers. Throwing hand grenades into the emplacements, he quickly followed with devastating rifle fire to silence the remaining enemy. With the vital enemy positions destroyed, his unit was able to continue its attack, completely routing the hostile force. The gallantry in action and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Flood on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
