The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Raymond A. Flood (ASN: 0-2033560), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 July 1951, near Tesong-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Flood’s platoon was assigned as assault unit in the attack on Hill 670. Lieutenant Flood led the platoon under strong resistance against a well dug-in enemy and gained a position near the hostile entrenchments. At this point the platoon was subjected to a potent grenade attack which wounded Lieutenant Flood and several men near him. Sending the wounded back for medical treatment and refusing aid for himself, he pressed the assault against the hill, rallying and encouraging the men, succeeding in driving the enemy from its positions. Lieutenant Flood’s determined leadership and dauntless aggressiveness, even though wounded, made possible the successful completion of his unit’s mission. His inspiring gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
