The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Maurice J. Flemings (ASN: RA-31262404), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 September 1950, Sergeant First Class Flemings was leading his platoon as point of a company attack near Chirwon, Korea, when a hostile roadblock was encountered. Although nearly encircled by the enemy, Sergeant First Class Flemings moved out into the fire-swept road fully to ascertain the situation. He then directed half of his men through a tunnel to one flank of the enemy force. Again exposing himself to the withering fire, he deployed the other men to positions from which they could cover the hostile emplacements. By this bold, valorous and skillful action, he completely eliminated the roadblock and killed and captured numerous enemy personnel and a quantity of equipment. Sergeant First Class Flemings’ notable courage, exemplary leadership and exceptional military ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
