The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Howard C. Flavell, Jr. (ASN: RA-31412163), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Heavy Tank Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 March 1951, near Sokch’on-ni, Korea, Sergeant Flavell, although exposed to constant bombardment by enemy artillery and mortar fire, attempted to retrieve his tank which was mired in the sand and water of the Han River. Despite the fact that he repeatedly received suggestions to leave his tank and change into dry clothing, he courageously remained on the turret of his tank, directing operations, until a direct hit mortally wounded and knocked him into the icy waters of the river. Sergeant Flavell’s exceptional gallantry and outstanding valor reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
