The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Robert J. Fitzgerald (ASN: RA-36021791), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 27 November 1950 in the vicinity of Unbong-dong, Korea. A numerically superior enemy force savagely attacked Company G forcing the main body to fall back to better firing positions. The enemy was at close range and a rear guard was needed to hold off his fanatic assaults. Sergeant Fitzgerald volunteered to remain with a squad of his platoon to fight as the rear guard. Under intense fire from the rapidly advancing enemy, Sergeant Fitzgerald deployed his overwhelmingly outnumbered men and counterattacked the hostile troops, forcing them to cease fire on the main body and allowing the column to continue its withdrawal unhampered. His heroic action caused heavy casualties to the enemy and his selfless devotion to his comrades permitted the company to withdraw to positions from which they later turned back the hostile attacks. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Fitzgerald reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
