The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Albert C. Fischer (ASN: 0-1117604), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 15th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951 in the vicinity of Map’Yong-ni, Korea. Lieutenant Fischer was acting as forward observer with Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment. After securing an objective, elements of Companies A and C were subjected to a strong counterattack by which they were forced to withdraw. Lieutenant Fischer, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved under small arms and automatic weapons fire to a position from which he could observe the enemy and direct effective artillery fire upon him. He remained in an exposed position while the enemy counterattacked twice more. The artillery fire directed by him helped greatly to disorganize the attack and enabled friendly units to secure the ground. The gallant conduct displayed by Lieutenant Fischer reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
