The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Lawrence Finneran (ASN: US-56140523), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 April 1952 in the vicinity of Sangdong-ni, North Korea. On that date, Private Finneran, a rifleman, was with a unit that was holding an outpost position well in front of the main line of resistance. When the enemy launched an intense barrage of artillery fire upon his units position, Private Finneran upon hearing that wounded were still lying upon the battle scarred terrain immediately volunteered to secure litters to evacuate wounded. With the litter under his arms, Private Finneran ran three hundred yards across the fire swept terrain to the aid of a wounded comrade. There, with the assistance of another man he proceeded to evacuate his wounded comrade. Upon hearing another call for aid, Private Finneran, although completely exhausted, dashed into the face of the withering barrage where he was mortally wounded. His gallant deeds served as an inspiration to his fellow comrades who, following his example, immediately went forth and brought the remaining wounded to safety. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Finneran reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
