The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Calvin David Ferneau (ASN: US-55009814), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Congar-Ni, Korea, on 12 April 1951. Spotting an enemy machine gun position strategically located on the flank of his company’s position, he immediately charged the position with his automatic rifle. Catching the enemy by complete surprise, he killed two and wounded one with his accurate fire, destroying the threat to his company. Later during the attack, his squad came under intense enemy mortar and small arms fire. Noticing a wounded comrade lying exposed to this fire, he went to the wounded man and started to carry him to safety. While helping the wounded man, he was mortally wounded by an exploding mortar shell. Private Fernau’s courage and devotion to a wounded comrade reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
