The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Robert H. Ferguson (ASN: 0-547911), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 2 July 1951, near Sabong-Song, Korea, Lieutenant Ferguson was attached to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, in the capacity of forward observer when that unit, occupying a defensive position, was suddenly attacked in the darkness by a numerically superior enemy force. Although the positions of the company were blanketed by heavy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, Lieutenant Ferguson, voluntarily and with utter disregard for his personal safety, moved to an exposed position to direct artillery fire. Heedless of the increasing intensity of the enemy fire being directed upon his post, he maintained the hazardous position and continued to adjust effective artillery fire upon the hostile force. Lieutenant Ferguson’s gallantry, courage, and professional skill materially contributed in repulsing the enemy attack and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
