The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles William Kellison (ASN: ER-16234515), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 27 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date during an attack on an enemy-held hill, Company B was pinned down by intense enemy machine gun fire. Sergeant Kellison, assistant platoon leader, realizing that the enemy weapon would have to be destroyed before the platoon would be able to advance, ordered a squad to outflank the enemy position. As the unit moved out, Sergeant Kellison commenced firing upon the enemy, thereby drawing hostile fire upon himself, and enabling the flanking squad to maneuver into position and destroy the emplacement. During the ensuing action, Sergeant Kellison was fatally wounded by an enemy round, but by his self-sacrificing efforts friendly units were able to advance and secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Sergeant Kellison on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
