Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 191 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Joseph H. Farrell, Jr. (ASN: RA-12064264), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 18 January, 10 March, 14 March, 24 March, 1 April and 7 April 1951, the 3d Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment was assigned missions of going behind enemy lines to obtain specific intelligence information concerning the enemy and Sergeant Farrell personally organized and voluntarily carried out the assignments. Although his penetrations of the enemy lines in conjunction with friendly civilians often involved him in fire fights with the enemy, his cool judgment and professional skill continually enabled him to obtain valuable information. In spite of the fact that he was many times in grave danger of being captured and knowing full well that it meant probably torture and death, he at all times placed the fulfillment of his mission above his personal safety. The gallantry, courage, and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Farrell reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
