The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Jimmie S. Farras (ASN: RA-19013811), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 and 7 December 1952, Company A, 1st Battalion, of which Sergeant Farras was first sergeant, suffered several casualties as they were assaulting a strategically important hostile position in the vicinity of Hak Tong-Ni, Korea. On the morning of 6 December 1952, Sergeant Farras left the cover and safety of his bunker on a nearby outpost and volunteered to lead litter teams to the objective, enabling the wounded members of his company to be promptly evacuated. The route he was forced to use led across a wide, exposed area that was under continuous enemy observation. Each time he led a group across this terrain, the hostile forces subjected them to an intense small arms and mortar barrage which caused the litter teams to become disorganized. Sergeant Farras exposed himself to the fire as he moved about encouraging his men and reorganizing them to accomplish their mission. On the following morning, he again led litter teams to the objective. As a result of his actions, the lives of many of the wounded friendly soldiers were saved. Sergeant Farras’ outstanding gallantry, initiative and untiring devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
