The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Thomas J. Farley (ASN: 0-1322012), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 January 1952 in the vicinity of Sangasan, Korea. On that date, one platoon of Company C, which was led by Lieutenant Farley, was sent out on a patrol mission to capture an enemy prisoner on an enemy held hill. After advancing some 800 yards the platoon was pinned down by heavy machine gun and light weapons fire. Moving his men, Lieutenant Farley openly exposed himself to direct intense hostile fire, at this time Lieutenant Farley was painfully wounded but refused to be evacuated until the patrol had withdrawn safely. Lieutenant Farley, regrouping and reorganizing his patrol, again tried to accomplish his mission. For the second time Lieutenant Farley was wounded and had to be evacuated. His gallant leadership and courage were an inspiration to all who witnessed his acts. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Farley reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
