The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Dallas Royce Alfonte, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 4 October 1918. Although painfully wounded by a machine-gun bullet on 4 October Captain Alfonte refused to be evacuated and remained on duty in an exposed position on Hill 240 until his regiment was relieved.
