Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 726 (November 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Philbert F. Farinha (ASN: US-56145010), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date, Private Farinha was a rifleman in a unit which had the mission of attacking and securing a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. In the course of this action Private Farinha’s squad was providing covering fire for the assaulting elements. Upon noticing that the machine gun crew of his unit had become casualties, he left his covered position and advanced over the fire-swept area to operate the weapon. Realizing the importance of the machine gun’s fire power, he assumed an exposed position and delivered accurate and effective fire on the hostile forces, inflicting numerous casualties upon them. As a result of his valiant efforts, friendly elements were able to accomplish their mission successfully with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Farinha on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
