The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Paul H. Fanning (ASN: 0-1185714), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On the afternoon of 22 April 1952, Captain Fanning was making a visual reconnaissance from an outpost position to determine artillery support for a friendly patrol near Sangmyong, Korea, when the outpost was suddenly subjected to an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage. Realizing the necessity for immediate friendly counter-fire, he unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his personal safety, raced through the heavy barrage to a point from where he was able to contact his unit. After he skillfully directed fire on the enemy positions for a short period of time, the foe suddenly increased the intensity of their fire and simultaneously their foot troops rapidly advanced toward the friendly positions. When the terrain to the front of his position obstructed his view of the approaching foe, Captain Fanning daringly dashed across the fire-swept terrain to a better vantage point and continued to direct withering fire upon the fanatical foe, resulting in numerous enemy casualties. When his communications were severed, he immediately grasped a rifle, charged toward the enemy, took up a firing position, and personally killed three and wounded three of the enemy. His intrepid feats so inspired the men that they rallied and laid down such an intense hail of fire that the foe was forced to retreat. Captain Fanning’s daring actions and extreme gallantry under enemy fire reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
