The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Francis R. Fahey (ASN: ER-31506816), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungchon-ni, Korea. Sergeant Fahey was leading his platoon in an assault to restore an observation post that had been overrun by the enemy. Remaining constantly in the open with complete disregard for his own safety, he skillfully maneuvered the platoon and then led his men in a final bold assault with grenades and bayonets, overrunning the position and routing the enemy with heavy losses. His expert employment of the weapons squad and his inspiring example of individual courage were major factors in the rapid and successful execution of the mission with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Fahey reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
