The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Raymond V. Evans (ASN: RA-7080123), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, in the progress of A Company’s attack on Hill 281, near Chungse-ri, Korea, Sergeant Evans’ squad was given the mission of destroying an enemy bunker holding up the advance of the leading assault platoon. Taking advantage of all cover possible in the open but rugged terrain, he led the squad forward until pinned down by intense small arms fire and volleys of hand grenades from the enemy bunker. Deploying the squad for a more advantageous approach, Sergeant Evans was wounded as he led the men, in a firefight at close range with the enemy. Disregarding his wound and the stubborn resistance of the foe, he vigorously pressed the assault until the bunker was neutralized. This mission successfully completed, Sergeant Evans continued to lead his unit against other hostile positions on the hill until sustaining a second wound which forced his evacuation. Sergeant Evans’ gallantry and exemplary leadership reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
